Chapter Nine: I Never Thought my Last Words Would be That Stupid
Prev/Next
A/N: Guys this chapter is so short 😭
Warnings: I changed so many of the lyrics of this song to fit the storyline better
Word Count: 750
Listen to: Ruthlessness
“Poseidon,” Odysseus breathed.
The man standing on the rocky shore of the island raised his trident, grey hair billowing in the leftover wind that was released from the bag.
“In all my years of living, it isn’t very often that I get pissed off.” Even from the ship you could still hear the voice of the imposing god. “I try to chill with the waves, but damn you crossed the line.”
You watched, frozen as Poseidon floated through the water toward your ship. “Ive been so gracious, and yet you hurt the son of mine.” He smiled at your fearful expression. “That’s right. The cyclops you made die, was mine.”
“No,” you and Odysseus said in unison, both your voices laced with disbelief.
It was like that single word summoned the god, because he appeared right in front of you. You scrambled back as Poseidon continued in his booming voice, “I’m left without a choice, and without a doubt. Guess the pack of wolves is swimming with the shark now.” He swept his trident to the right, and several figures rose above the ship- six wolves made out of water, trying to swim while a shark circled the pack.
“I gotta make you bleed, I need to see you drown.” The god’s words cut through the visual, and you raised your forearm to block the water droplets that rained down. “But before you go, I need to make you learn how ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.”
You took another step back, and then there were two, quite solid things- going shoulder to shoulder with you.
You looked around wildly and breathed a sigh of relief when you realized it was Polites and Eurylochus, both pointing their swords at the god that stood before you.
Poseidon only sneered at the sight of the blades. He turned his attention to Odysseus, who was now unprotected.
“You are the worst kind of good, ‘cause you’re not even great,” Poseidon said, circling the captain. “A Greek who reeks of false righteousness- that’s what I hate! ‘Cause you fight to save lives, but never get the job done.” He raised a hand and curled it into a fist. “I mean you totally could’ve avoided all this, had you not killed my son. But no.”
Polites could see you shaking and turned you toward him gently. “Open arms,” he told you softly.
“No,” you replied in the same low voice as him. “That won’t work here.”
Your attention was jolted back to Poseidon as the god said, “Now it is finally time to say goodbye. Today, you die. Unless, of course, you apologize for my son's pain and all his cries.”
“Poseidon, we meant no harm,” you tried. “We only killed him to disarm him.”
Odysseus, nodding, added, “we took no pleasure in his pain. We only wanted to escape.”
Poseidon stopped and narrowed his eyes at the both of you. “The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible. So close your heart the world is dark.”
The god raised his trident. “Die!” He screamed, bringing the butt of the trident down on the floor of the ship.
Almost instantly, geysers of water shot up and around the other ships of the fleet. You stumbled to the railing, knees weak from the thought of the deaths you might have caused. You could hear panicked screeching coming from the helms of the ships. “Captain! Captain! Captain! Captain!”
Poseidon waved his hand and all went quiet.
“What have you done?” Odysseus whispered, looking out at the destruction. The only thing left of the rest of the fleet were a few sinking sails and floating floorboards.
“Forty three left under your command.” You could practically see the proud smirk on Poseidon’s face without turning around.
You felt a hand on your shoulder, and you glanced behind you, shocked; the hand belonged to Poseidon. “I am your darkest moment,” the god murmured. “The monster that always draws near.”
He raised his voice and took his hand off of your shoulder. “Any last words?” He asked grudgingly.
You had been eyeing the bag for a while, and now you lunged forward. “All I gotta do is open this bag!” You said triumphantly, untying the rope and flinging it open.
“What?” Poseidon thundered, but you were already speeding off on the newly summoned winds, leaving the god and his island behind.
You slumped back, closing your eyes and releasing a sigh of relief.
You wondered if you imagined the, “remember me…”

Round 1 - Phylum Annelida
(sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Annelida is a large phylum, whose animals are sometimes called the “segmented worms.” This is a large phylum containing over 22,000 living species. Annelids are made up of multiple segments, each with the same set of organs (except for the oddball Echiurans). Instead of cilia, they use fleshy protrusions called parapodium for locomotion.
Annelida is a diverse phylum with animals that have adapted to many different environments, including terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats from tidal zones to hydrothermal vents. It includes the earthworms, leeches, ragworms, feather duster worms, and others.
Many marine polychaete worms live in tubes they build themselves or burrow in the sand to ambush prey or filter feed, but some spend their whole lives swimming in the water column.
Propaganda under the cut:
Earthworms are important in farming and in ecology as they help aerate and enrich the soil.
The largest annelid is the endangered Giant Gippsland Earthworm (Megascolides australis), which is on average 1 m (3.3 ft) long and 2 cm (0.79 in) wide. They can reach up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long, and they can stretch to seem much longer or contract to seem shorter.
Like earthworms, marine polychaetes also aerate the sea floor, enabling water and oxygen to reach the other creatures that live with them.
Annelids help scientists monitor the quality of water, as different species have different tolerances for water quality.
Medicinal leeches are still used for blood-letting, though not as frequently as they once were. In fact, some species of leech are threatened due to overharvesting for this purpose!
Annelids don’t fossilize well due to their soft bodies, so most fossils are simply jaws or tubes. The earliest annelid fossil that can be confidentially identified is dated to the early Cambrian, and most of our modern polychaete groups appeared by the end of the Carboniferous.
Okay so you’d still love your partner if they were a worm, but would they be your favorite animal?
#round 1#animal polls#i am so neutral about these guys EXCEPT#for Phyllodocids#because there was this one time I was watching Nautilus Live and they came across this Gossamer Worm just swimming freely in the dark ocean#twisting and turning around it was mesmerizing#and I started crying just for the wonder of it all#how blessed I am to share a planet with such amazing creatures

I'm beginning to realise that a major reason why I woke up in the middle of August and was like "I REALLY DESPERATELY URGENTLY FINALLY NEED TO DRIVE AROUND ICELAND FOR TWO WEEKS ON MY OWN" (apart from, you know, seeing Iceland) is that this will be the first time since Ireland that I will completely on my own schedule and on my own and off to clock and not available and it's really interesting that the people in my life who are the most like 'why would you want to go to Iceland on your own, there's nothing there, that sounds boring, it's empty and cold' are the ones I most need a break from. It's you, the stressor is you.
#I feel like my most recent Berlin holiday might have been the breaking point to put me off of group holidays and city trips#and the friends (i love them bless their heart) who made that trip such a chore are exactly the same ones who're like#'but that sounds boring why don't you want to go somewhere warm with us :(('#I'm sorry I need to go somewhere where I can park somewhere on a whim and wander where I want at a moment's notice#without explaining#I need to walk for ages and not see a house or a street or a neighbour#I need to pick a destination without negotiating its convenience#and most importantly i need the ocean

Blessed by a Trickster
Chapter Six: The Storm is Getting on my Nerves
Prev/Next
Warnings: I don't think so
Word Count: 795
Listen to: Storm
You awoke to the sound of waves crashing against wood and floorboards creaking dangerously. If you strained you could hear a voice saying, “brace for a storm.” And then an echoing, “storm.”
Your eyes adjusted to the darkness and you realized you were below deck of the main ship. Polites sat on a wooden stool beside you, looking rather asleep.
“Polites,” you whispered. “Polites.”
“Huh?” Your friend’s eyes shot open and he stared around in confusion before his gaze landed on you. He blinked fondly at you. “Oh! Hi, Y/N.”
“Hey,” you responded. “Can you get me on deck?”
He raised an eyebrow and pushed his glasses up to the bridge of his nose. “You shouldn’t be walking.”
You waved away his concern. “Yeah, I sort of got that from how Eurylochus dramatically carried me out of that cave.” You saw Polites visibly tense at the mention of the second in command, but didn’t think about it.
“I guess I could carry you…” Polites relented. “At least up the stairs.”
You grinned. “Thank you, Polites.”
So he grudgingly helped you to your feet, your toes barely skimming the floorboards before he swept you up, even more gracefully than Eurylochus had yesterday.
Polites was small, much smaller than the other men, but he didn’t struggle to carry you up the stairs; you may be taller than him, but you were leaner and lighter than him.
You heard Odysseus’s voice over the roaring of the sea. “Head toward the island, but avoid the crashing waves.”
“Thank you,” you murmured to Polites as he set you down, a rosy blush adorning his face at your sweet tone.
“Anytime,” was all he could muster.
“Captain.” your head turned to the familiar voice and you saw Eurylochus cross the ship to Odysseus. “We will capsize with these waves, our fleet will fail.”
“Have them follow our ship, we’ll ensure that we prevail!” You called across to your friends. Their heads whipped toward you, Odysseus looking glad you were alive, and Eurylochus looking horrified.
Polites’s back was turned to you and you unstrapped his sword from his back.
Using the sword as a sort of support, you stumbled over to one sail.
“Very good,” Hermes said. “But you need help with that.”
“Then help me,” you responded through gritted teeth as you unsheathed the stolen sword.
There was a burst of gold, and then Hermes was hovering in front of you. He wriggled his eyebrows at you. “What’s the magic word?”
“Help me now or we’re all dead. Which means you’re dead, because Athena is still watching over Odysseus and will kill you.” You smirked.
“That’s twenty two words,” Hermes mused, counting on his fingers before shrugging. “Guess they work.”
His caduceus morphed into a dagger, and the god used it to cut through one half of the rope. You took care of the rest, and the sail flew open, untroubled now that the ensnaring rope had been removed.
“We’re taking too much damage to survive!” You heard Eurylochus call. “At this rate we won’t make it out alive!”
You snorted. “Thank you, Hermes,” you said, turning away from your mentor.
A sudden lurch made you slam into the side of the boat. You gasped in pain as wood met your limp leg, and stars danced in your vision.
You blinked, and for a second you thought you were dead. Through the clouds was a silver island shape. You blinked again, yet it was still there.
You weren’t the only one to notice it. Elpenor and Perimedes both pointed to the island. “Captain, look!” They shouted.
You struggled to your feet. “An island in the sky,” you said in unpracticed unison with Eurylochus and Odysseus.
“Eurylochus, grab the harpoons. As many as you can find,” Odysseus ordered.
“What do you have in mind?” The second in command asked.
“We’re gonna shoot for the sky.”
“What?” Eurylochus demanded, incredulous.
But Odysseus was already turning away to gaze up at the sky island. Eurylochus rolled his eyes slightly and made his way toward you; you were handing out harpoons, having overheard the conversation.
You offered him two, and he took them. His fingers brushed yours for less than a millisecond, but just the touch made his heart flutter. Eurylochus gave you a small nod of thanks, and you smiled. Gods you had to stop smiling at him like that, especially when he’s trying to concentrate.
“Everyone grab a harpoon and raise it high!” Odysseus’s command rang across the ship, and you followed it, ignoring the flare of pain in your leg. “We’re aiming for the island in the sky.”
Harpoons went flying out of hands, but none connected with the island.
“In the sky,” you repeated, shutting your eyes.
Then you threw.

Mer Elliott headcanon (also it's for mermay lmao)
Elliott sometimes helps Willy out with catching invasive sea urchin because they decimate entire reefs and kelp forests and populate like crazy. Though, he's a tad bit too squeamish to give it a taste.
